Downloading and Install OptiFine in Minecraft

Minecraft Java Edition's graphics haven't kept pace since the Bedrock version got RTX support. But don't worry, modders like the OptiFine creators have stepped in to provide solutions. Let's go over how to download and set up OptiFine in Minecraft so your game looks better. If you're still wondering about the RTX situation, check out a comparison of Minecraft Java and Bedrock Editions. Once that is done, we can tackle those visual differences and get OptiFine working.

Originally, OptiFine was all about making Minecraft run smoother. Now, it does that and also lets you improve the game's visuals without losing frames per second (FPS). After installing OptiFine, I'll also show you the best settings to make your Minecraft worlds look amazing. First, let's understand what it does.

What Does OptiFine Do?

OptiFine is more than just a regular add-on for Minecraft — it's a combination of mods and settings all rolled into one. It lets you run shaders and also helps resource packs look their best, which makes the game look much better. It also adds graphical improvements even if you don't use shaders. You can install OptiFine to run as a separate profile in your launcher, or you can install it using Minecraft Forge. Both ways are shown down below.

What You Need to Run OptiFine

One of the great things about OptiFine is that it doesn't need much to run, other than Minecraft itself. If you have an older PC, OptiFine can help boost your FPS and make the game run smoother. If you have a newer PC, OptiFine is a must-have. It can improve your graphical experience.

Anyone who wants to improve Minecraft's graphics should use OptiFine, as long as they have Minecraft Java Edition. As of right now, there's no official OptiFine version for Bedrock.

How to Download OptiFine for Your Minecraft Version

Before heading to the download page, check which version of Minecraft you're using. Start the game, and the version number is at the bottom left.

Now that you know your Minecraft version, here's how to install OptiFine:

  1. Go to the OptiFine downloads page. You'll see OptiFine for most Minecraft versions. If you don't see yours, click Show all versions at the bottom. When you find your version, click Download, or use the (Mirror) link if the main download doesn't work.
  2. After clicking "download", you might see an ad page. Don't click anything except the "Skip" button at the top right. It will appear after a few seconds.
  3. After skipping the ad, you'll reach the download page. Click the download button and the file will download.
  4. Because the installer is a Java (.jar) file, your browser might warn you that it could be a virus. Don't worry! It's safe because tons of people use OptiFine daily. Click "Keep" to save the file.

How to Install OptiFine in Minecraft

When the download is done, double-click the file to open it. It should open with Java as an installer. If you have problems opening it, see the FAQ section for help.

  1. When the OptiFine installer opens, it should automatically find where Minecraft is installed. If it doesn't, click the button to find it yourself. If everything looks right, click "Install".
  2. The installation takes only a few seconds. Click "OK" to close the installer. OptiFine is now installed on your PC.
  3. Open the Minecraft launcher, and you'll see OptiFine already there. To select it, click the arrow next to your profile name, choose OptiFine, and click Play.

If you already use other mods with Minecraft, install OptiFine through Forge instead. Here's how:

How to Install OptiFine with Forge

The process is like installing OptiFine normally, so it's not hard. Be sure you have Forge installed. If not, read this guide on how to install Forge. If you don't want to install using Forge, skip to the next part.

  1. Download OptiFine for your Minecraft version, as explained above. Copy or move the file to the "Mods" folder in your Minecraft folder. If you can't find it, type %appdata%\.minecraft\mods into the Explorer address bar or the Run window (Win + R).
  2. Double-click the installation file. This time, instead of clicking "Install", click the button next to the location. This opens a new window where you can select the OptiFine install location.
  3. Go to the shaderpacks folder in the Minecraft directory. If your game is installed in the default location, the Shaderpacks folder should be right there. If not, copy this into Folder Name – %appdata%\.minecraft\shaderpacks, then click "Open".
  4. With the new location selected, click "Extract" instead of "Install" to save OptiFine in Minecraft Forge. When it's done, click "OK".
  5. Since OptiFine is installed as a mod, it will act like any other mod in Minecraft. Launch the game with Forge, and OptiFine will work automatically. Installing OptiFine in the shaderpacks folder ensures it works with any shader packs you might use.

Best Graphics Settings for OptiFine

To check if OptiFine is installed correctly, start Minecraft and go to "Options" on the home screen, then "Video Settings".

You'll see many more options than usual, like settings for shaders, animations, and details. The best settings will depend on your computer.

Usually, OptiFine automatically adjusts to run Minecraft smoothly while still looking good. If you want a good balance, stick to the default settings and enjoy 30–60 FPS, even on a lower-end PC.

The most obvious change is the improved sky and lighting. The water and lava look smoother with OptiFine. Also, you can see through the gaps in the tree leaves, just like in reality. The changes aren't huge, but they make the game better.

If you have a powerful PC, OptiFine lets you use shaders, which can make a big difference. Download them online and put them in the %appdata%\.minecraft\shaderpacks folder. Popular shader packs include Chocapic13 Shaders and many others you can try. We can't play RTX on Java, but with the right shaders, we can come close.

The most noticeable part is the lighting. It's hard to see the torch in the first picture without shaders, but they make it stand out. The lighting distance, texture quality, shadows, and colors look more realistic.

Best OptiFine Settings for High FPS

If you just want the game to run well, OptiFine makes it easy. While in-game, press ESC and go to "Video Settings". Or, click "Options" on the home screen and then "Video Settings".

Set Graphics to Fast, automatically smoothing the game. Set Smooth Lighting to Off because it uses a lot of GPU power. You can reduce the render distance even further, but 8–12 chunks looks good and is still playable. The max framerate can be set to maximum, but you won't see a change beyond your monitor's capabilities.

Turn off Entity Shadows to put even less load on your system. GUI Scale, brightness, and bobbing don't affect the GPU much, so set them as you want. Finally, turn off Dynamic Lights and Dynamic FOV to finish the best FPS setup, which you can use even without OptiFine.

Quality Settings for High FPS

Almost done! Next, go to Quality Settings. Changing these settings will restart the game a lot, but that's normal and won't harm your worlds. Here are the settings to use:

Turn off Mipmap Levels, setting their type to nearest. Then, turn everything OFF from Emissive textures to Custom GUIs. This might seem extreme, but it will greatly improve your FPS, even on the weakest PCs. Set Distortion effects and FOV effects as you like. Click "Done" to save. OptiFine will greatly improve your FPS.

Details Settings

You need to be more careful with the details settings because they affect the game's looks. These options won't affect performance as much as the quality settings, so set them to your liking. For the best FPS use these settings:

Set all the options that aren't sliders to either OFF or Fast. Cloud height, held items tooltips, and fog start don't usually affect performance, so you can set them how you like. The entity distance, or how far away you can see mobs, should be between 75–125% to maintain gameplay even with performance in mind. Biome blend needs to be off for the fastest performance. Click "Done" to save.

Minecraft is now optimized for the highest FPS. At first glance, the changes aren't huge. But looking closely, you'll see the differences — fewer details in the sky and distant textures, tree leaves returning to solid blocks, but FPS jumping to 600+ in our tests.

The game should run smoothly with OptiFine, but if you use other mods, you might have problems. If the game crashes, remove OptiFine until you find a fix.

How to Uninstall OptiFine from Minecraft

Close the Minecraft launcher and the game before starting. Then, follow these steps to remove OptiFine:

  1. Find where Minecraft is installed by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting "Open file location". Or, type %appdata%\.minecraft\ into your Explorer address bar or press Win + R.
  2. Delete the optifine.jar file from these locations:
    • .minecraft/mods/
    • .minecraft/versions
    • .minecraft/shaderpacks
There might be multiple OptiFine versions installed. You can delete them all.
  3. To delete the files, select them and press Shift + Delete to permanently remove them.

OptiFine and its settings will be gone when you restart the game. If uninstalling seems too extreme, here are some fixes for common errors.

OptiFine: FAQs & Errors
