How to Build and Use a Boat with a Chest in Minecraft

Right now, everyone's talking about the cute new mobs coming in the Wild Update. But get ready for something else cool: boats with chests! This new feature is a combo of two things we already have in the game. It might seem simple, but it changes how you play. You can use it for long trips or to make cool Redstone contraptions. Most players are just starting to mess around with them, so we're only seeing the beginning of what they can do. Maybe you'll be the one to figure out something awesome. Boats with Chests in Minecraft 1.19 (2022)

First, we'll go over the basics of boats and chests. But if you're already a pro, you can skip straight to the instructions on how to build a boat with a chest and some ideas on how to use it.

What You Need to Make a Boat and Chest

Don't worry, this is easy. You just need a boat and a chest to make a boat with a chest. To make those, here's what you'll need:

• 13 Wood Planks (any kind from regular trees)
• 1 Wooden Shovel (made with 2 sticks and a wooden plank)
• Crafting Table

How to Make a Boat in Minecraft

To make a boat, you'll need a shovel and 5 wooden planks. All the planks should be the same kind of wood. Put the planks in the bottom row of the crafting area. Then, put two more planks in the second row, leaving the middle spot empty. Put the shovel in the middle spot, and you've got a boat!

The color of the boat depends on the type of planks you use. Also, in the Bedrock version, you can make a boat without a shovel.

How to Make a Chest in Minecraft

Minecraft has lots of ways to store stuff, like shulker boxes, ender chests, and barrels. But to make a boat with a chest, you need a regular wooden chest. All you need for that is 8 wooden planks. Like with the boat, use the same type of wood for all the planks.

To make a chest, put 8 planks around the edge of the crafting area, leaving the middle spot empty. Drag the chest to your inventory. No matter what kind of wood you use, the chest will always look the same.

How to Make a Boat with a Chest

This is the easiest recipe ever. Just put a chest and a boat in the crafting area. You don't even need to put them in a certain order. You don't even need a crafting table! Like other simple recipes, you can make a boat with a chest right in your inventory.

Types of Boats with Chests

The only difference between boats with chests is their color. You can't use different kinds of chests, but you can use any regular boat and combine it with a wooden chest. The boat you get will be the same color as the wood used for the boat. Here are the different kinds you can make:

• Oak Boat with Chest
• Spruce Boat with Chest
• Birch Boat with Chest
• Jungle Boat with Chest
• Acacia Boat with Chest
• Dark Oak Boat with Chest
• Mangrove Boat with Chest

Keep in mind that mangrove boats and mangrove wood are part of the new stuff in the Minecraft 1.19 update. So, you won't find them in older versions.

How to Use the Chest on Your Boat

Using a boat with a chest is pretty much the same as using a regular boat and a regular chest – most of the time. When you're sitting in the boat, it moves like normal, and you can't open the chest. To see what's inside, hit your inventory key (usually the E key).

If you're standing next to the boat, you can hold the crouch button and open the chest without getting in. It'll work just like any other chest. Here are a few other things to know:

• If you break the boat, the chest breaks too, and all the items pop out.
• The chest doesn't make the boat go slower, and neither do the items inside.
• If you have a chest on your boat, only one person can ride it. The chest takes up the other spot.
• Other players and mobs can ride in the boat with a chest. If the seat is full, you'll have to get rid of them or break the boat to get in.

Boats with Chests and Hoppers

A boat with a chest is a great way to store and move items. But you can also use it to unload items into a hopper. Just make the boat go over a hopper, and the hopper will suck up the items and move them into a chest.

The hoppers treat the boat with a chest like a dispenser. If you plan it right, you can even use it in your automatic farms. The boat with a chest can carry items to Allays, who can then grab them and sort them.

When Is the Boat with a Chest Coming to Minecraft?

Boats with chests were first added in Minecraft Beta 1.18.30.28/29. If you're playing the Wild Update beta or the Minecraft Preview, you can try them out right now (as of March 2022). If not, you'll have to wait a few weeks for the official release of Minecraft 1.19.

The fact that they added boats with chests shows that the developers are listening to us! Players have been asking for this for ages. Who knows what other simple but important things they'll add next? If you can't wait, there are some cool mods that let you try out new stuff early. But you'll need to install Forge first.
